In short

  • To buy Moroccan shares you need a securities account with a bank or brokerage firm.
  • Orders are usually placed through an online trading platform.
  • Compare brokerage fees, custody fees and the minimum fee per order before choosing.
  • A share can lose value: diversification and using money not needed in the short term are two ways to limit that risk.

Before you start: the right questions

The stock market is neither a game nor a guaranteed investment. A share price can fall sharply, sometimes for years. Before investing your first dirham, take a few minutes to clarify three points:

  • Your emergency savings: keep several months of expenses in an easily accessible account.
  • Your time horizon: shares are generally presented as a long-term investment, because changes over a few months cannot be predicted.
  • Your risk tolerance: could you watch your portfolio fall by 20% or 30% without panicking? This question helps you measure the risk you can bear.

Six steps to invest on the Casablanca Stock Exchange

  1. Choose an intermediary

Only licensed brokerage firms can execute orders. In practice, most individuals go through their bank or an online trading platform offered by a banking group (Wafa Bourse, BMCE Capital Bourse, CDG Capital Bourse, BP Bourse, CIH, CFG Bank…). See our comparison of online brokers.

  2. Open a securities account

It holds your shares and is linked to a cash account used to settle purchases and receive sale proceeds and dividends. You will need your ID, proof of address and bank details, and you will fill in an investor-profile questionnaire.

  3. Fund the account

Make a transfer from your bank account. The amount depends on your situation, and this money remains at risk of loss.

  4. Choose your first shares

Look at each company’s business, results, debt and dividend policy. It helps to understand what a company does before making any decision.

  5. Place an order

Enter the share, the direction (buy or sell), the quantity and the order type. A limit order lets you set the maximum price you are willing to pay.

  6. Track and adjust your portfolio

Follow your companies’ results, dividend announcements and the MASI index. Avoid checking prices every hour: it is the best way to make emotional decisions.

Types of stock orders

Order typeHow it worksWhen to use it
Limit orderYou set a maximum buying price or a minimum selling price. When you want to control the price you pay. The order may not be filled.
Market orderExecuted at the best price available. For very liquid shares, when execution matters more than price.
Stop orderBecomes active when a price threshold is reached. To limit a loss or lock in a gain, if your platform offers it.

How much does it cost?

  • Brokerage commission: a percentage of the order amount, often with a minimum per order.
  • Exchange and settlement fees: small market fees charged on every trade.
  • Custody fees: annual fees for holding your securities, sometimes waived.
  • VAT on commissions.
  • Taxes: a tax on capital gains (15% for listed shares) and a withholding tax on dividends (11.25% in 2026, then 10% from 2027, for resident individuals).

Common beginner mistakes

  • Putting everything into one stock, often the latest fashionable IPO.
  • Buying on a rumour read on a forum or a WhatsApp group.
  • Panic selling during a general market fall.
  • Ignoring fees by placing many small orders.
  • Investing borrowed money or money needed in the short term.
Beware of scams

Be wary of promises of quick, guaranteed returns, paid “signals” and platforms that are not licensed in Morocco. Always check that an intermediary appears on the AMMC’s list of licensed brokerage firms.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum amount to invest?

There is no legal minimum: you can buy a single share. Because of minimum fees per order, many investors start with a few thousand dirhams.

Can I invest from my phone?

Yes. Most major banking groups offer a trading app to follow prices and place orders.

Can Moroccans living abroad invest?

Yes, through a securities account opened with a Moroccan bank, often linked to a convertible-dirham account. Check the tax rules of your country of residence.

Can I lose more than I invested?

No, when you buy shares outright without borrowing: your maximum loss is the amount invested, which can still be lost entirely if the company fails.
